Lord, Show Us Your Glory

Pastor Ed Riddick - Sunday, January 1st, 2006

Introduction:

1. Dad, what does it refer to when the Bible talks about God’s glory?

So I did a brief study on the word “glory”

Then my heart cried out with Moses…

Exodus 33:18 “Then Moses said, “I pray You, show me Your glory!” ”

2. God’s glory is a reference to…

It does not refer to God’s essential nature but to the brilliant, luminous manifestation of his person, his glorious revelation of himself.

It is characteristically linked with verbs of seeing.

Exodus 24:16-17 “The glory of the Lord rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; and on the seventh day He called to Moses from the midst of the cloud. “And to the eyes of the sons of Israel the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a consuming fire on the mountain top. ” NASB95

Exodus 16:7 “and in the morning you will see the glory of the Lord, for He hears your grumblings against the Lord; and what are we, that you grumble against us?”” NASB95

Exodus 16:10 “It came about as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. ”

It’s your kindness Lord that leads us to repentance.

Your favor Lord is our desire.

And it’s your beauty that makes us stand in silence.

Your love is better than life, better than all there is in the world.

Better all the riches of the world.

What would you like for God to do for you? What do you need?

Recognize his glory in creation:

Psalm 19:1 “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. ” NASB95

Isaiah 6:3 “And one called out to another and said, “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory.” ” NASB95

Psalm 29:3 “The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; The God of glory thunders, The Lord is over many waters. ” NASB95

Especially God’s Presence in the Sanctuary

Exodus 28:2 ““You shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty. ” NASB95

Exodus 28:40 ““For Aaron’s sons you shall make tunics; you shall also make sashes for them, and you shall make caps for them, for glory and for beauty. ” NASB95

Exodus 29:43 ““I will meet there with the sons of Israel, and it shall be consecrated by My glory. ” NASB95

Exodus 40:34-35 “Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. “Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. ” NASB95

Only of God

Isaiah 42:8 ““I am the Lord, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another, Nor My praise to graven images. ” NASB95

Glory, fame, reputation, It expresses God’s glory and power. Used for appearance – the manifestation of a person, with special stress on the impression this creates on others.

The highest duty of man is to give honor, praise in worship, word and actions to God. In no way do we give glory to God except in the sense that like a telescope – our worship, words and actions recognize God’s glory and we bring the glory of God up closer for others to see.

Psalm 24:7 “Lift up your heads, O gates, And be lifted up, O ancient doors, That the King of glory may come in! ” NASB95

Does your heart cry out? “Lord, I pray You, show me Your glory!” ”

In your life, do you want to bring the glory of God up close?

John 15:8 ““My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. ” NASB95

How can we glorify God? By bearing fruit!

Jn 15:2 “bear fruit” prunes so it will bear “more fruit

15:4 “cannot bear fruit unless”

15:5 “he bears much fruit

15:8 “by this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and so

prove to be my disciples”

15:16 “You did not choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should remain”

Success: accomplishing, achieving, climbing ladders that don’t

necessarily matter in the long run.

Significance: the process of accomplishment in the things that really

matter in life in the long run. The things that matter to God.

We need to rethink the rest of our lives in terms of significance.

Fruit: What is he talking about?

Isaiah 5:1f Character

Galatians 5:25 Qualities

Others: Ps 80:8f; Eze 15;

John 15:17 Love one another w/ sacrificial love

John 15:27 w/ Acts 1:8 Impact

Must hear the music of the kingdom before

John 17:18 “As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.”

“Lord, if you choose to give me another five years I would like to invest them in __________.”

We bear fruit…

Questions for Reflection:

1. What would you like to see cut from your life?

Anything remaining in 2005 that you need to let go of?

Anything remaining in 2005 that you have left undone but really

do need to do?

2. “May the Lord bless you and guard your heart.”

Is your heart divided? Over what?

Do you want an undivided heart?

Have you renounced evil in your heart?

Have you invited the Lord to examine your heart?

To see if there be any hurtful way in me.

To see if there be any impurity in me.

To see if there is any divided loyalty in my heart.

And Lord, give me a singleness of purpose and focus.

Oh Lord, I don’t want anything in my heart or in my life that vales your glory.

2. We bear fruit through the process of abiding in Christ

Renew your commitment to walk with Christ!

3. We bear fruit through focused and confident prayer

John 15:7-8 ““If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. ““My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. ”

John 15:16-17 ““You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. ““This I command you, that you love one another.”

John 16:24 ““Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full. ” NASB95

If you could do anything for God in 2006 what would it be?

If you were to focus on one ministry what would it be?
